Stroke

The comprehensive stroke program at UPMC Hamot is comprised of Board Certified Neurologists with special expertise in stroke care and cerebrovascular disease. Additionally, Interventional Radiologists, and a Neurointerventional Radiologist (Specialized Stroke Care) offer advanced stroke treatment including mechanical clot retrieval. UPMC Hamot is one of the few places in the country to offer this level of expert diagnosis and treatment in stroke care.

UPMC Hamot's stroke program was first certified by the Joint Commission in 2007, and has received advanced re-certification in stroke by the Joint Commission in 2009 for the hospital's continued commitment to maintaining the highest standards of stroke care and quality patient outcomes.

The Primary Stroke Center at UPMC Hamot is lead by James DeMatteis, M.D., Stroke Medical Director along with an acute stroke response team available 24/7 for the rapid evaluation and treatment of sudden stroke.
