Hernias

A hernia is a defect in the musculature of the abdominal wall that allows fat or abdominal contents to protrude through the abnormal opening.

  • A groin hernia is an external bulge in the groin area that contains fat, connective tissue and/or a portion of intestine.
  • An umbilical hernia is located in the naval area.
  • Hiatal hernia is a condition in which a portion of the stomach protrudes upward into the chest through an opening in the diaphragm.
  • An abdominal wall hernia is a protrusion of digestive organs through the abdominal wall.
  • Incisional hernias are defects that appear at the site of a prior surgical incision. They are repaired laparoscopic or open with mesh.
  • Epigastric hernia occurs above the naval and is usually due to a weakness, gap or opening in the muscles or tendons of the upper abdominal wall, on a line between the breast bone and the navel or umbilicus.
  • Diverticulitis

Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which the esophagus becomes irritated or inflamed because of acid backing up from the stomach.
  • Peptic ulcer disease is a break in the normal tissue lining the stomach.
  • Gallbladder disease.
  • Appendicitis is an irritation, inflammation and infection of the appendix.
  • Bowel obstructions.
  • Malignancies of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, small intestine and colon.

  • Colon resection - removal of diseased colon open or laparoscopic-assisted.
  • Splenectomy - removal of spleen. They are performed open or laparoscopic.
  • Gastrectomy - removal of tumor in the stomach.
  • Diagnostic procedure of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), which is an exam and biopsy of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
  • Colonoscopy, which is an exam and biopsy of the colon.
  • Liver biopsy, which is a wedge or needle sample of the liver.
