What to Expect
Upon your arrival, you will be evaluated by a registered nurse who will ask you questions about your condition. This process is known as triage and helps our medical team determine your treatment needs.
During triage, you may have X-rays or blood work obtained in preparation for the doctor to see you. You or a family member will be asked to sign a consent form that gives us permission to treat you.
Some of the questions you will be asked when you arrive include:
- What are your current medical conditions and symptoms?
- What is your prior medical care and medical history?
- What are the names of your physicians?
- What are the current prescriptions or over-the-counter medications you take?
After triage, you will be taken to a treatment room. If the Emergency Department is very busy, you may be asked to have a seat in the waiting area until a room is available.
Once you are in a treatment room, the emergency doctors and nurses will reassess your condition and treatment needs. In some cases, your primary care physician or a specialist will be contacted to assist in your care.
Hamot's staff of board-certified physicians, nurses, technicians, case managers and other support staff pledge to deliver world-class care.
Cardiac ER
This year, we estimate that 1,500 people in Erie County will suffer a heart attack. At Hamot, we believe the time is right to provide heart attack victims and their families the advantages of a dedicated center that joins the people, technology and the facilities needed to implement a higher standard of care. This dedicated center is the Hamot Cardiac ER.
Parking
For minor emergencies or if you are not arriving by ambulance, you can be brought to the main Emergency Department entrance on French Street. Your loved one may then park the car in one of the surface metered lots or parking ramps operated by the City of Erie. The cost of parking in a metered lot is 25 cents for 20 minutes. Ramp parking will be validated for patients/families following their Emergency Department visit (one car per family).
