Support Groups
Surgical weight loss support group meetings are an excellent source of information about weight loss surgery. These meetings are attended by people who are considering weight loss surgery, as well as those who have completed their surgery.
Groups discuss the pros and cons of weight loss surgery. Topics covered include the procedure, nutrition, psychology, exercise, and plastic surgery. A bariatric surgeon and staff from the UPMC Hamot Bariatric Surgery Center are available to answer questions during these meetings.
It is important that you attend at least three support group meetings before surgery. You should continue to attend these meetings for at least one year after surgery.
Support group meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month at the Clarion Bel-Aire Hotel and Conference Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It is a free meeting and does not require advance registration. Patients are encouraged to bring a friend or family member.
