Special Medical Staff Sessions

June 22nd, 2010

Special Medical Staff Sessions

In response to the medical staff’s request for an independent consultant, Hamot has retained Cliff Bluestein, M.D., an advisor with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Dr. Bluestein will present, from a physician perspective, expert information and counsel about the pending healthcare reform policy and its impact on Hamot. He will also discuss future trends and financial pressures facing the healthcare industry.

You are invited to attend Dr. Bluestein’s presentation on Wednesday, June 30, at 7 a.m. or noon in the Hamot Auditorium. Both sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes. Refreshments will be provided.

Dr. Bluestein serves as PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Director of Healthcare Advisory Practice.  He has extensive clinical, surgical and practice experience in hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, private practice offices and nursing homes.

Medical Staff Quarterly Meeting

The next Medical Staff Quarterly meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 27 at 7 a.m. in the Hamot Auditorium. The agenda includes an update about the strategic affiliation process to be presented by members of the Hamot Board of Trustees.

Congratulations to the bariatric surgeons for receiving the distinguised award for the “Bariatric Center of Excellence”!    Our Bariatric Surgery Center is the only recognized Center of Excellence in the area. The surgeons and staff provide a  high quality service to the community and continue to be recognized.  If you see the surgeons or staff members please congratulate them for receiving there recertification.

Hamot Mentorship Program

June 10th, 2010

We have a large number of physicians joining Hamot in July. If you would be interested in being a mentor please let me know. I have been working to plan three scheduled events throughout the year to help mentors and new physicians get together. The first event was June 2 at Lake Shore. The next event will likely take place in September.

A physician mentor should be a current physician at Hamot that partners with a new physician and acts as a sound board, confidant and career coach. The mentor should offer advice and guidance to promote the professional development of the new doctor and help him/her acclimate to the community.

 Program Goals

- Continue to build relationships with physicians.

- Assist physicians adjust professionally and develop their practice.

- Help physicians and families personally adjust to their new environment.

- Maintain regular contact with physicians and their spouses. To stay abreast of how they are adjusting and to anticipate any problems that may develop.

- Emphasize Hamot’s commitment to continuous improvement and continued learning.

-  To provide a “check-in” system for new physicians to see how expectations are being met.

- Provide enhanced two way communication.

- Reduce turnover and increase retention.

I would be happy to discuss further via email sara.erhartic@hamot.org or phone 877-3605. Or feel free to post any thoughts or ideas on how we can improve the program.

Emergency Department Satisfaction

June 8th, 2010

Hi all! I hope you will find this blog useful.  I wanted to take the opportunity to update all of you on how that Hamot ED has made a remarkable turn around in changing culture and improving through-put times and patient satisfaction.

You may not know this but 2 years ago the Hamot ED was completely overwhelmed with increasing volumes and acuity at a time when there were significant shortages in nursing and physician staff.

The physician, nursing and ancillary staff came together in a big way to impact and change the negative culture and we are now seeing the results of this as our patient satisfaction went from the 48th percentile (which was still better than our competitor but not acceptable to us) to now greater than the 90th percentile.

This truly is an amazing team of people who basically work in a Emergency Department that is half the size it needs to be and is seeing almost 70,000 patients annually.  I hope you and your patients are pleased with the change in events that is occurring in the ED.

As always if you have care issues or concerns related to the ED please call me directly.

Physician Recruitment Update

June 8th, 2010

I have been working as the physician recruiter for about a year and a half. I have personally been pleased with the many successes we have had this year. The successes have been a team effort. All physicians I have worked with are very responsive to questions and have a willingness to participate in the process. Also everyone has been very giving of their time and put a great effort into making the physician’s visit a positive one. I greatly appreciate the continued help.

We have all spent a great deal of time, effort and money to recruit talented physicians to Hamot. One area that I hope we continue to put resources towards this year is physician retention. We need to continue to work at helping physicians and their families adapt to Erie and Hamot. We have restarted the physician mentor program and are working towards a spouse welcome committee. Do you have any ideas on how to increase retention?

Specialty Physician Network Welcomes New Urologist

June 8th, 2010

I wanted to welcome a new physician to the Hamot Physician Network.
Dr. Peter Bridges has joined Dr. Evankovich and Dr. Sciarrino at Lakeview Urologic Surgeons.

The addition of Dr. Bridges has greatly improved access for patients and has allowed us to provide timely consultations and/or treatment.

The office is pleased to share that it has also been able to utilize its new procedure suite located right in the office, at 300 State Street. Many of their procedures, including Urodynamics, will be performed in the suite.

Lakeview Urologic Surgeons can be reached at 877-5700.

I look forward to sharing more news from The Hamot Specialty Network.

Vicki
