Courses

GNURS525 Theoretical foundations of Nursing 3SH:
This course deals with the basis of theory construction and its role in providing the scientific basis for the practice of nursing

GNURS526 Role Theory and Professional Issues 3SH:
This course deals with the examination of theories underlying the construction and definition of roles in society. Professional roles/issues and their interrelationships within the health care system perspective are considered.

Research Component

GNURS650 Research Methodology 3SH:
This course involves the systematic examination of the research process and methodologies appropriate to nursing.

GNURS651 Research Seminar 3SH:
This seminar experience guides the student in developing the problem statement and a theoretical structure in preparation for writing the research report.

GNURS721 Thesis/Project Guidance 3SH:
Individual Courses to meet student needs focuses on the development of writing and defense of the research report.

Supporting Courses

GNURS561 Chemistry and Physics of Anesthesia 3SH:
This course investigates the basic principles as they relate to clinical nurse anesthesia practice. Discusses mechanics, fluids, gases, electricity, electronics and anesthesia equipment. A review of inorganic and organic chemistry completes the course.

GNURS627 Physiology for Anesthesia I 4SH:
A detailed systematic investigation of the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the cardiopulmonary system. Focuses on the integration of this knowledge into planning, implementation and evaluation of patients requiring anesthesia.

GNURS628 Physiology for Anesthesia II 3SH:
Prerequisite: Physiology for Anesthesia I
A detailed systematic investigation of the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the endocrine and renal system. Focuses on the integration of this knowledge into planning, implementation and evaluation of patients requiring anesthesia.

GNURS629 Physiology for Anesthesia III 2SH:
Prerequisite: Physiology for Anesthesia II
A detailed systematic investigation of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the nervous system. Focuses on the integration of this knowledge into planning, implementation and evaluation of patients requiring anesthesia.

GNURS625 Pharmacology for Anesthesia I 3SH:
A study of anesthesia pharmacology. Discusses the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anesthetic agents, muscle relaxants and local agents. Included are uptake and distribution of anesthetics, the metabolism, excretion and elimination of the anesthetic drugs.

GNURS626 Pharmacology for Anesthesia II 3SH:
Prerequisite: Pharmacology for Anesthesia I
Continues Pharmacology for Anesthesia I and discusses the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of accessory drugs used in anesthesia. Includes an in depth discussion of the drugs affecting the autonomic system, the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system and emphasizes integration of this information into clinical practice.

Specialty Courses

GNURS630 Foundations of Nurse Anesthesia I 3SH:
Introduction to the art and science of anesthesia. Discusses basic concepts of anesthesia and introduces the student to techniques and procedures of anesthesia. Reinforcement of didactic principles will be gained in a structural simulation setting.

GNURS632 Foundations of Nurse Anesthesia II 3SH:
Prerequisite: Foundations of Anesthesia I
A continuation of foundations in Anesthesia I. Includes progressive guided instruction and clinical management of patients undergoing orthopaedic, obstetrical, emergency anesthesia as well as unologic anesthesia and outpatient anesthesia. The course begins with an indepth study of the genetic patient requiring anesthesia. Reinforcement of didactic principles will be gained throughout the course.

GNURS725 Advanced Anesthesia Nursing I 3SH:
Prerequisites: Foundations of Anesthesia I and II
Guided individual and group study to assist the student in analysis and evaluation of various nurse anesthesia strategies as they relate to pediatric and cardiothoracic surgery. Provides an opportunity for application of didactic materials to clinical situations.

GNURS726 Advanced Anesthesia Nursing II 3SH:
Prerequisite: Advanced Anesthesia I
Guided individual and group study to assist the student in analysis and evaluation of various nurse anesthesia strategies as they relate to otolaryngologic surgery, anesthesia for uncommon diseases, burns, the obese patient and transplantation. Provides an opportunity for application of didactic materials clinical situations. An in-depth discussion of the legal aspect is included.

GNURS731 Role Integrated Seminar 3SH:
This course exposes the nurse anesthetist to areas of professional responsibility. A wide range of topics are discussed including the business of nurse anesthesia. Professional aspects are integrated throughout this course. Through guided individual and group study this course is designed to assist the student in analysis and evaluation of their professional role.
