Transitional Care Unit (TCU)
The Transitional Care Unit (TCU) opened at Hamot in September 2005. The TCU functions as a step-down unit, caring for patients who meet specific criteria. The unit accepts patients who are sixteen years of age and older and serves a variety of patient populations.
The TCU is a 12-bed unit with all the beds equipped with telemetry. Four of the twelve rooms have bedside telemetry and mechanical ventilators.
The TCU is staffed with a ratio of three patients for each nurse. New TCU staff members benefit from a nurse preceptor program in which each nurse is guided through a 12-week orientation. Continuing education is offered and encouraged.
TCU utilizes a shared governance model of leadership. Shared governance is a philosophy that empowers each staff member to help in the decision-making process. The committees in TCU consist of: Practice Council, Peer Review, Retention and Recruitment, Quality Assurance, Scheduling and PCA.
