Center for Digestive Disorders

More than 3,500 endoscopic procedures are performed at the Hamot Center for Digestive Disorders each year, including Colonoscopy, Upper Endoscopy, ERCP, Bronchoscopy, Thoracentisis, Paracentisis, Manometry, the Bravo procedure and percutaneous gastrostomy tube replacement (PEG). The center employs RNs and clinical technicians who assist physicians in therapeutic interventions and provide superior quality care. Services in the center include, but are not limited to: cancer screening, control of GI bleeding, feeding tube needs, and the management of liver and biliary disease. RNs employed at the center are required to have excellent assessment skills, ACLS certification and knowledge of the gastrointestinal tract and related disorders. After two years, nurses are encouraged to become certified in gastroenterology.

Level of Care:

  • Majority of patients are stable with occasional emergency situations
  • Number of beds on unit:
  • 4 pre-op areas, 4 procedural beds/ 5 recovery beds/ 1 manometry bed
  • Average daily census: 10 – 15

  • Equipment: Therapeutic and diagnostic procedure equipment
  • Various G- tubes and accessories
  • Monitors: Endoscopic monitors/ Hewlett Packard vital sign monitoring equipment
  • Designated rooms for special patient needs: Fluoroscopy Room/ Clean & Dirty Equipment/ Post – Op Recovery Room / Manometry Room
