Visiting Rotations

Visiting Residents:

For information regarding visiting rotations at UPMC Hamot for residents, please contact Shanna Koval in the office of Medical Education, by phone at 814-877-4178 or via email at kovalsm@upmc.edu at least two months prior to the requested rotation start date.

Visiting resident rotations will be coordinated by UPMC Hamot’s Medical Education Department.

The Medical Education Coordinator will confirm the acceptance of the rotation by the attending physician, set up the visiting resident’s orientation session and assemble the required paperwork.

No later than two weeks before the rotation begins, the visiting resident or the resident’s sponsoring institution must provide:

  • A program letter*
  • A copy of the resident’s valid Pennsylvania medical training license
  • The resident’s NPI number
  • Certificate of liability insurance
  • Updated health and immunization records**
  • Criminal background checks:
    • Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check
    • FBI Identification Record, also known as a Criminal History Record by the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
    • Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance
  • Resident’s date of birth and the last four digits of the Social Security number (used to set up computer access and privileges)

*The program letter should be signed by the program director and state the following:

  • Resident is in good standing
  • Resident’s program and post-graduate year (PGY) status
  • Dates of the requested rotation
  • Supervision/evaluation responsibility
  • Sponsoring institution pays resident salary/benefits
  • In case of accident/injury resident/sponsoring institution is responsible
  • Who claims resident for Medicare reimbursement (hospital where training is done)

**UPMC Hamot requires that all residents provide:

  • Bloodwork verifying immunity to varicella, rubella, rubeola and mumps
  • Results of a Mantoux PPD test for tuberculosis within the current year (or two tests within 30 days of each other if a Mantoux test has never been done or if it was not done the previous year.
  • Proof of Tdap vaccination after 2005 with the Adacel vaccine.
