Emergency Medicine Residency
The Hamot Emergency Medicine Residency Program offers a well-rounded
training experience in the field of emergency medicine. Hamot
is the recognized referral center and leader in the provision
of emergency and trauma care services for the tri-state region
(Northwest Pennsylvania, Southwest New York and Northeast Ohio).
Hamot Medical Center is a 358-bed tertiary care hospital and
fully accredited Level II Trauma Center. The Emergency Department
volume is currently more than 60,000 patients per year and is
growing. We treat a diverse patient population with moderate to
high acuity. Our new 25,000 square-foot state of the art Emergency
Department has 35 private patient rooms including three dedicated
trauma resuscitation rooms and onsite radiology and CT suites.
We also have a patient tracking system and bedside registration.
The Hamot Medical Center osteopathic residency training in emergency
medicine provides the osteopathic resident with progressive learning
experiences that develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge of
an osteopathic physician to efficiently provide quality emergency
care. The residency is a four-year AOA-accredited program. Training
will enable the emergency medicine resident to rapidly evaluate,
initiate treatment, and provide appropriate therapy and disposition
of the emergency patient. The program will prepare the resident
to meet certification requirements of the AOA through the American
Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine. The program will also
allow the resident to integrate OMM skills and practice into the
treatment and diagnosis of emergency medicine patients.
The residency prepares the resident to:
- Manage medical/surgical problems presented in an emergency
department setting, based on the knowledge of basic and clinical
sciences.
- Use critical thinking in making effective decisions for patient
management.
- Rapidly and accurately evaluate, organize and initiate treatment
of the emergency patient.
- Make sound, ethical and legal judgments as to the expected
risks arising from therapy as well as the condition being treated.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the psychomotor skills required
of a competent emergency physician.
* Effective 2008 the emergency medicine program
will be a four-year program, inclusive of the OGME one-year.
