COO Announcement
I am proud to announce that effective August 6, 2012, David Gibbons, MHA, RN, will assume the role of UPMC Hamot Chief Operating Officer (COO).
Mr. Gibbons joined the UPMC system in 2009 as President of UPMC Northwest, a 180-bed facility located in Cranberry Township that serves as the major health care provider for patients throughout Venango County.
Under Mr. Gibbons’ direction, UPMC Northwest added and improved medical services including hospitalist, emergency medicine, pathology, and anesthesiology services. He recruited and employed more than 30 physicians, realized a strong financial position and more efficient operations, and developed a top quality and safety program. Mr. Gibbons' leadership guided Northwest through a large and successful eRecord conversion and helped it to achieve designations as a Level III Trauma Center, a Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a Primary Stroke Center. Mr. Gibbons was instrumental in the establishment of a premier women’s program in collaboration with Magee-Womens Hospital at Northwest as well as an impressive number of telemedicine programs.
Prior to joining UPMC, Mr. Gibbons held numerous clinical, management, and executive positions at health care institutions throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Mr. Gibbons graduated from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 1986 with a nursing degree and in 1992 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He also earned a Master of Science in Health Administration from Saint Joseph’s University in 1999.
As UPMC Hamot COO, Mr. Gibbons will have responsibility for a majority of UPMC Hamot service lines and will develop strategies to enhance the growth and range of services available to patients locally and regionally. He will work closely with me to assess advancements in medicine and emerging technologies, strategically steering the organization in a direction that will maintain and enhance the level of care offered to our patients.
With more than 26 years of extensive experience and an impressive background both clinically and in health care administration, Mr. Gibbons was a clear choice to lead UPMC Hamot’s operations in the UPMC system. I am confident that Mr. Gibbons’ leadership qualities will allow UPMC Hamot to advance care, quality, and meet the needs of our patients.
